Well done. You’ve remembered the lesson very well, but have you understood it and followed the Lord Jesus in the right way?

Not your best effort! So you haven’t remembered the lesson very well, but have you understood it and followed the Lord Jesus in the right way?

next

#1 What did the first of the potential recruits (the scribe) say to the Lord Jesus?

He was very confident and probably thought he would be very useful to the Lord Jesus.

next

#2 How did the Lord Jesus respond to the Scribe?

The test was designed to show whether the scribe was really sincere in needing help from the Lord Jesus. If he was not sincere, he would be turned away by the Lord Jesus.

next

#3 We may be tested like the scribe. What does Jesus tell us about how we should come to him?

We have nothing to give to Jesus, we can only repent of our sins and ask for His forgiveness. Other people we have learned about in this series, like the centurion and the street woman were very humble, understanding how unworthy they were.

next

#4 The second potential recruit didn’t volunteer but was called by the Lord Jesus. How did the man respond?

By saying he had to bury his father, it didn’t mean his father had died. It meant that he wanted to carry on his family life and get his inheritance from his father in the future. He was not willing to lose his inheritance to follow Jesus.

next

#5 We may have heard from our Sunday School teachers about how the Lord Jesus can save us. When is the best time to follow Jesus?

Don’t delay or you may leave it too late! Nothing is more important than seeking and finding the Lord.

next

#6 If we hear the Lord Jesus calling us, perhaps through Sunday School lessons and from reading the Bible, knowing our consciences are troubled by the bad things we have done in the past, what should we do?

If we truly want to follow Jesus, we must genuinely repent and turn away from sins and believe that the Lord Jesus will save us and take us to heaven. Some of the other answers are useful, but repentance and belief have to come first.

#1 In today’s lesson we learnt about a woman who had lived a very sinful life and had spent many years ignoring God’s word. How did most people react to this woman when they met her?

Yes, many people did not want to know her and would try their best to avoid speaking to her because of the sinful way she had lived her life.

next

#2 The woman heard about the Lord Jesus and she went to hear Him speak. What did Jesus have to say to people like her?

Yes, we all have hearts that are full of sin and we deserve to be sent away from God forever. But the Lord God is so full of love that He sent His Son Jesus to die for us so that our sins can be forgiven. All who truly repent and trust in Jesus can be saved, no matter how wicked they have been.

next

#3 What did the woman do after she heard the words of Jesus?

Yes, the woman knew she was a sinner, and she was amazed to hear that the Lord still loved her and wanted to forgive her. She truly repented and promised to leave her old, wicked ways behind. She asked God to help her live a life that pleases Him. If we come to the Lord in true repentance, He will forgive us too. We will have new hearts which will be full of joy and we will want to serve Him.

next

#4 Simon the Pharisee invited Jesus to come to his house for some food. The woman heard about this as she lived nearby. What did the woman do when she saw Jesus?

Yes, she knew that she had to go and see Jesus and tell Him in person that she was sorry for her sins and to thank Him and worship Him for being her Saviour. She took her precious, costly ointment with her so that she could wash Jesus’ feet to show how much she loved Him.

next

#5 Simon the Pharisee was not happy to see this woman in his house. What did he think when he saw the woman washing the Lord Jesus’ feet?

Yes, Simon the Pharisee thought that this was proof that Jesus could not be the Son of God who knows all things. Simon thought that Jesus did not know about the woman’s past life of sin because if He had known He would not have wanted to speak to her or let her touch Him. Simon did not understand that Jesus knew the women and knew she had repented and that He loved her.

next

#6 Jesus knew everything that Simon was thinking for He is all powerful and knows everything. He told Simon a parable. What is a parable?

next

#7 In the parable there were two men who owed another person money. One man owed £50 and the other owed £500. The two men then had their debts cleared and did not have to pay the money back again. Why did Jesus tell this parable to Simon the Pharisee?

Yes, Jesus told the parable to help Simon see that God will only forgive people who realise that their hearts are full of sin and who truly repent. Simon thought that he was good enough for God by himself and had never truly repented.

next

#8 Simon the Pharisee thought that God would be pleased with him. He was proud of his achievements and thought that God would surely take him to heaven. What things can we do to make ourselves good enough for God and heaven?

Yes, there is nothing that we can do to make ourselves good enough to go to heaven. We sin and break God’s rules every day. But even though we do not love God as we should, He still loves us and He sent Jesus to be punished on the cross for all our sins. He has done everything to save us. All we must do is repent and believe. What a wonderful Saviour He is!

next

#1 What work did Zaccheus do?

Zaccheus was a tax collector.  This meant that he was very unpopular with everyone.

next

#2 What kind of a person was Zaccheus?

All of these were true of Zaccheus.  It is not necessarily a bad thing to be rich.  However, Zaccheus got most of his money dishonestly, taking it from poor people.

next

#3 Why did Zaccheus climb the tree?

He was hated by many people (not surprisingly), but he did not seem to care too much what people thought.  He climbed the tree because he was a short man, and that was the only way he could see Jesus – he was very keen to see Him.

next

#4 What does the word ‘repent’ mean?

‘Repent’ means to be truly sorry for our sin.  We can say ‘sorry’ very easily, but we might not mean what we say.  If we repent, it is because we can see that our sin is evil and has grieved the Lord God (made Him sad), and we are truly sorry for all those things.  If we do repent, we must also believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and He will forgive us, and save us.

next

#5 Jesus said, “The Son of man came to seek and to save that which was …….

The Lord Jesus came to save lost sinners.  We are all sinners, and we are lost unless we have trusted in the Lord, to take away our sin.  No-one is good enough to go to heaven.  In fact, no-one is good at all, except for Jesus Himself, and He is perfect.

next

#6 Does anyone have so much sin that Jesus cannot forgive them?

When Jesus died on the cross, that was enough to pay for the very worst sins.  So if we truly repent, and truly believe, He will certainly forgive us.

next

#7 Once Zaccheus believed in the Lord Jesus, he immediately said that he would repay everyone he had robbed – four times the amount he had stolen from them. All the answers are true except for one ….. which one is false?

Zaccheus wasn’t bothered about ‘looking good’.  Zaccheus was a very different person now, with a new heart, and he really wanted to serve the Lord, and to please Him.

next

#8 When Zaccheus went to bed that night, he would have been:

If the Lord Jesus saves us from our sin, that is the greatest thing that can happen to us.  We will definitely be full of joy, and no-one can take that away.

#1 Today we learnt about two sisters who Jesus visited. What were the names of the two sisters?

The sisters were called Martha and Mary.

next

#2 Martha and Mary reacted differently when Jesus kindly sat down to talk to them. Why was Mary’s reaction to Jesus the right one?

All of the above are true. Mary wanted to listen to the gracious words of the Lord Jesus Christ more than anything else. We should all be like Mary and listen to what He has to say to us through reading our Bibles and listening to the Sunday School lessons.

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:”
John Ch.10 v.27

next

#3 Why was Martha upset and complaining to Jesus about Mary talking with Him?

Martha wanted to do the everyday chores around the house and perhaps prepare a meal for their important visitor, but Mary was talking to Jesus instead of helping her. This annoyed Martha as she thought Mary should help her with the hard work.

next

#4 How did Jesus react to Martha’s complaining?

Jesus reacted in a kind and understanding way towards Martha. But He was also firm with her and said that her sister had chosen to do the right thing by listening to Him. Martha should have done what her sister did and listened to Jesus instead of busying herself with household chores.

“The Lord is gracious, and full of compassion: slow to anger, and of great mercy.”
Psalm 145 V.8

next

#5 Why did Mary do the right thing and listen to Jesus?

Mary made the correct choice to listen to Jesus as He told her how she could have her sins forgiven and receive everlasting life by believing on Him.

next

#6 How should you react when you learn about Jesus in Sunday school?

Believe what the teachers are telling you and repent of your sins. That is to change the way you live your life so that it is pleasing to God and to trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and love Him with all your heart – to become a Christian.

“The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye and believe the gospel”
Mark Ch.1 v.15

next

#7 What happens if you don’t want to listen to what you are taught in Sunday school and ignore God’s command to repent?

If you die with your sins not having been forgiven by the Lord Jesus Christ, you cannot enter Heaven. You will instead be found guilty of breaking God’s laws and be cast into hell forever by a just and righteous God.

“In  flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of His power;”
2 Thessalonians Ch.1 Vs. 8&9

Excellent – well done! One more question: what does the Lord Jesus think of you?

Oh no! One more question: what does the Lord Jesus think of you?

next

#1 Our lessons in this series are about people who followed the Lord Jesus. In this week’s lesson the Lord Jesus had arrived in the city of Capernaum; what sort of person did we learn about?

The centurion was an important, high-ranking officer in charge of the whole garrison at Capernaum, with many soldiers who carried out his commands.

next

#2 The Centurion heard about Jesus and realised that he needed his help. What was it that he wanted the Lord Jesus to do?

The Centurion’s servant was his personal attendant, who was very close to him. He would have already tried many doctors to make him better, but the servant was dangerously sick.

next

#3 Why did the Centurion believe that Jesus could heal his servant?

The centurion was certain that the Lord Jesus was God and therefore had unlimited power and that all things would obey His commands.

next

#4 The Jewish leaders were bringing Jesus to the Centurion’s house when the Centurion sent messengers to tell Jesus not to come. Why did he do that?

The centurion was overwhelmed by his unworthiness, knowing that the Lord Jesus knew his innermost sins, seeing into his heart.

next

#5 The Lord Jesus did not go into the Centurion’s house, nor did he see his servant. Why was the Centurion not worried about his servant anymore?

The centurion demonstrated his great faith in the Lord Jesus, believing that He was the holy Son of God.

next

#6 What did Jesus do after he received the message from the Centurion?

The centurion’s faith was rewarded. The Lord Jesus will never let us down if we trust in Him like the centurion did.

next

#7 We all have a sickness that only the Lord Jesus can heal: what is it?

Every person who has ever lived has sinned, with the only exception of the Lord Jesus. Every one of us needs to be saved and the Lord Jesus is the only one who can do that, because He lived a perfect, sinless life and took the punishment for our sins when He dies on the cross.

#1 In today’s lesson we learned about shepherds. What job does a shepherd have?

Yes, a shepherd’s job was to look after sheep. In Bible times it was a hard job with many dangers. Shepherds were strong and brave. They would look after their flock of sheep day and night. There were many wild animals that would try to attack the sheep and the shepherds would sometimes even have to fight with bears and lions.

next

#2 In today’s lesson something incredible happened to a group of shepherds whilst they were caring for their sheep on the hillsides of Bethlehem. What happened?

Yes, an angel appeared in a blaze of light in the sky. At first the shepherds were afraid but the angel brought wonderful news that filled them with joy. After this many angels then filled the sky and sang praises to the Lord God.

next

#3 At first the shepherds were afraid of the angel but after listening to the angel’s message they were filled with happiness and joy. What message did the angels bring?

Yes, the angel told the shepherds that the Saviour had been born in Bethlehem. The angel told the shepherds where they could find Jesus too. After this the sky was filled with many angels and they sang praises to God. They said “Glory to God in the highest, and on the earth peace, good will toward men.”

next

#4 What time of year do we especially think about the birth of Jesus Christ?

Yes, Christmas time is the time of year when Christians especially remember the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem. It is lovely to spend time with family and give and receive presents but we should always try to remember that the best gift this world has ever received was when Jesus left heaven to be born in this world. Jesus came down because He knew that one day He would die on the cross to take away the sins of all those who trust in Him.

next

#5 The shepherds were told the good news by the angels. Where can we hear about this wonderful news today?

Yes, everything we need to know about the Lord Jesus and how He can be our Saviour is recorded for us in the Bible. We can read it for ourselves and we can also listen to our Sunday School lessons and ask our Sunday School teachers if we have any questions.

next

#6 After receiving this wonderful news, what did the shepherds do next?

Yes, the shepherds knew how important Jesus was and they wanted to find Him straight away. They did not make any excuses or wait until it was morning time. They rushed down into Bethlehem and found Jesus laying in a manger and they worshipped Him for they believed that he was the Son of God who had come to save them from their sins. What is our reaction when we hear about Jesus? Many people are not interested and carry on living their lives without praying to Him. Some people think that they will wait until they are older and then pray to Him. We must learn from the shepherds’ example and pray to Him today and ask Him to forgive us.

next

#7 Jesus’ life did not begin in Bethlehem. He is the Son of God and He is eternal. Before coming down to Bethlehem as a baby He lived in Heaven. Why did Jesus give up all the wonders of heaven to live in our sinful world?

Yes, Jesus knew that every person is full of sin. We have all ignored the Lord and His commandments and deserve to be punished and sent away from Him for ever. But the wonderful news of the Bible is that God loves us even though we have not loved Him. Jesus said that He would come into this world and die on the cross of calvary for us. On the cross He was punished for all the things we have done wrong so that we can go freely to heaven one day if we believe and trust in Him.

next

#8 The Bible tells us that everyone who truly repents and believes in Jesus with all their heart will have their sins forgiven, their hearts made clean and be taken to heaven to be with the Lord Jesus one day. What does it mean to repent?

Yes, repentance is when we recognise that we have done many sinful things which have displeased the Lord. We say sorry to God and ask Him to help us to not do those sins anymore. When we speak to God in prayer, He knows whether or not we really mean what we say or not. He has promised that He will always hear the prayers of everyone who truly repents and believes that Jesus died on the cross to save them.

#1 Why was Mary chosen to be the mother of Jesus?

We don’t know exactly why Mary was chosen – only the Lord knows that.  But we do know that Mary was a humble Christian, who was happy to do whatever God wanted her to do.  Otherwise, she was an ‘ordinary’ person, and certainly not rich.

next

#2 The name ‘Jesus’ means:

The Lord Jesus Christ is all of those four things to us, but the name ‘Jesus’ means Saviour.

next

#3 Jesus had another name, Emmanuel, which means ‘God with us’. This teaches us that:

Jesus is a man, but He is also truly God.  He belonged in Heaven, but He left that behind for our sake, and lived a very humble (and difficult) life here on earth.

next

#4 Who was Jesus’ true father?

Joseph was Mary’s husband, but Jesus’ Father was God the Father Himself.

next

#5 When Joseph heard that Mary was expecting a baby, he decided he could not marry her. But what actually happened?

Joseph had a visit from an angel, who told him that Mary had done nothing wrong, and that the baby was God’s son. Joseph was then very happy to marry Mary.

next

#6 Jesus was born at Bethlehem because:

Joseph and Mary lived in Nazareth, but they had to travel to Bethlehem (Joseph’s family home) for a census (that’s when everyone in the country is counted).  Also, God had decided that Bethlehem was where Jesus must be born.

next

#7 Where was Jesus born?

Jesus was born in a very humble, and probably dark and dirty stable.  Most kings want to be rich and admired, but Jesus was not like this.  He was willing to live a hard life, and to die a terrible death, all for our sake.

#1 The people of Israel were led into the wilderness (desert) by Almighty God. How many Israelite people were there?

2 million Israelite people were led into the wilderness. That was a huge number of people, comparable to the entire population of Devon, Cornwall and Somerset put together. They all had to be provided with food to eat and water to drink.

next

#2 The people of Israel needed to drink plenty of water in the hot desert, but the only water they first found tasted horribly bitter and so they complained to Moses to help them. How did Moses make the bitter water sweet to drink?

Moses cried out to the Lord God in prayer for help and the Lord graciously provided Moses with instructions on how to make the water sweet by putting a certain tree into the lake of water. Almighty God will always answer the cries/prayers of His people (Christians).

“ The righteous (Christians) cry, and the Lord heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles”

Psalm 34 Verse 17

next

#3 The Israelites quickly ran out of food in the desert, but God provided food from Heaven (Manna) for His people. God only allowed the Israelites to gather just enough food each day to satisfy their hunger. If they gathered too much it would stink and be full of worms before the next day and it could not be eaten. Why did God do this?

God is very kind to His people (Christians) and provides them with all they need every day. He does not give Christians too much as this would spoil them and make them greedy, lazy and unthankful. He gives them sufficient grace every day, but we must trust in Him and pray to him.

next

#4 God commanded the Israelites not to collect food on the Lords Day (Sunday). How then did the people have enough food to eat on the Lords Day?

God allowed the people to gather twice as much food on the Saturday so that it could be eaten on the next day (Sunday). God also prevented the food (manna) from stinking and being infested with worms on the Sunday as this was a special day (Lords Day).

next

#5 What should we all do on Sunday (Lords Day)?

Sunday is the Lords Day (sabbath day) and we should all stop doing unnecessary work and spend the whole day worshipping and thanking Almighty God for his kindness to us every day of our lives. God actually commands all people to “remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy” Exodus Ch.20 v.8. This is the eighth of the ten commandments you may have learnt in Sunday School.

“But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work…For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it”

Exodus Ch.20 Vs. 10,11

next

#6 Why did the Israelite people complain about God and want to go back to Egypt?

They did not trust that God would provide them with all that they needed. Because of this distrust, they felt uncomfortable and scared in the hot desert and thought they would die. They wanted to go back to Egypt where they knew they would at least have some food and drink, even though the Egyptian people were very cruel to them. If only they had trusted in a kind Lord God to provide them with all they needed! Then they would not have been scared, angry or complaining, but would have instead been happy, calm and contented.

next

#7 How does God feel when we murmur or complain against Him when things go wrong in our lives?

God gets very angry with us when we complain against Him as He is very kind and provides us all with many good things in our lives. Unfortunately we sin against God every day and we deserve nothing from Him but His just punishment for our sins. However, God commands us all to repent of our sins and turn to Him and trust in Him. If He forgives us our sins and we become a Christian, we then receive many other blessings from Him such as the promise of Heaven when we die, peace in our hearts, a new life of living for Him and telling other people of the glorious gift of salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ.
